Tell me about your business.

The Birth Equity Advocacy Project is a program that is a part of Causes to Care About, a 501(c)(4) organization. BEAP advocates for equal access to quality prenatal and perinatal care for all families of color. We operate exclusively to promote social welfare through advocacy, and we are dedicated solely to lobbying for birth equity.

How long have you been in this field and what’s your background?

BEAP is a new organization, but not new to this issue. Our team of advisors includes nonprofit founders, experienced lobbyists, legislative staffers, campaign advisors and more. We currently work in Colorado California, and Georgia with plans to expand to more areas soon.

What inspired you to create this business, and what makes you different from other ones in your field?

Now more than ever we must address this as the human rights issue it is and highlight the inequalities in the maternal care that families of color receive. This issue requires urgent action to ensure a sustainable future for our community. Mortality rates among Black and Latinx mothers and babies continue to be higher than those for their white counterparts. With Covid-19 deepening the impact of inequality, now more than ever we must motivate state and federal legislatures to ensure families of color get more access to more resources. There is a lack of birth equity everywhere for Black mothers/birthing people and that is precisely the problem. BEAP is sole committed to lobbying on behalf of families of color to improve their quality of life.

How does your business help new parents?

BEAP focuses on lobbying, advocating, and raising awareness for racial equity in maternal care. We also engage with parents and health care providers through community outreach to lift their voices and collaborate with grassroots organizations that support families of color.
