In honor of #WomensHistoryMonth, I’d like to showcase #LucretiaMott. Being a mama herself to 6 children, Lucretia Coffin Mott was a trailblazer for feminism. Born in 1793 on Nantucket Island, MA, and raised as a #Quaker, Mott was an advocate for #antiracism and #genderequality (Michals 2017). Next to her supportive husband James, Lucretia fought to abolish slavery and encourage women to participate as writers and speakers in the 1830s (Biography 2021).
In 1848, alongside her gal pal Elizabeth Cady Santon, Lucretia presented the “Declaration of Sentiments” at the Seneca Fall Convention where many people including Frederick Douglas attended (Biography 2021). The Declaration of Sentiments were essentially a list of women-specific demands including divorce, custody rights and the right to vote (Michals 2017).
Later in 1850, Mott and her husband James not only protested the passing of the Fugitive Slave Act, but they helped an enslaved person escape to their freedom (Michals 2017). Lucretia did other amazing things such as finding the Philadelphia Female Anti-Slavery Society in 1833, becoming the first president of the American Equal Rights Association in 1866 and establishing Swarthmore College while also working to influence it to be coed (Biography 2021).
Overall, Lucretia was instrumental in pushing forward equality for #women and #BIPOCs through education and social justice. l just love how she made sure to marry a supportive partner to help her achieve her dreams. She did all of this, PLUS was a #Mother to 6 kids! What an inspiring woman. Thank you, Lucretia for being such a POWERFUL role model for #WomenWednesday and all of us mamas.
